After having watched Chris Anderson’s video on Technology’s Long Tail, I was left with 3 thoughts to ponder on :
1. Choose the right technology, Not all new technology will be useful
When new technologies come out on the market , we often get curious and carried away with its features that we want to have them right away. How can we be assured that the technology we invest in will be useful and not be put to waste? Before purchasing anything, one should first know how it will be used , meet the goals of the school and support the curriculum . A careful decision making process is crucial to the success of any IT development plans.
2. Free is the most interesting thing.
Things evolve fast . What used to be worth a lot of dollars, is now being offered for free. The web offers a wide range of applications that can be used in the classroom . The impact of this to education is huge. There are many free apps that enhance learning in the classroom. Teachers should take advantage of this by learning the apps and find ways on how they can incorporate it in their teaching. There’s a wide variety of free applications out there – all we have to do as educators is to use them.
3. What’s the long tail in learning ?
Online learning has maintained its high for quite some time now and as the years progress, it seems that e-learning is not just becoming a trend but a way of life. At present, there are unlimited opportunities on the web of various online courses that students can take . The wealth of resources is massive ! Technology enhanced learning is a trend that would be wise to adapt in our international school . In fact, we started this in a very small scale when two of our students had to go back to Italy in the middle of the school year . Teachers along with our principal had to device a platform for the students to continue their studies . The school’s e-learning portal is ongoing and the results so far are good. As teachers, we believe that in this world of technology, distance should not be a barrier to education.
